What is the best FREE software to use to make a song from scratch?

I have to make a song for a contest, well i dont have to but i think writing songs is my calling and this could be my big break, but i need to know what software to use to produce it. Please help!

thanks!What is the best FREE software to use to make a song from scratch?Yup, Audacity is great.

Another great program is Fruity Loops, which has a wide range of instruments to literally create songs from scratch - even if you can't play an instrument. (like me lol). It is commercial software, but the demo is really powerful on its own and lets you export your songs and midi files- just not project files. Try it out!What is the best FREE software to use to make a song from scratch?Don't use the Windows sound recorder-it's totally lame;

Get 'Audacity'; a free %26amp; fantastic audio recorder/editor;

You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Built-in effects include Bass Boost, Wahwah, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST plug-in effects.

And it records unlimited length of time (hard drive limit).
