There is good information in the genealogy community that Legacy has plans to be integrated with the LDS/Mormon site like Family Tree Makers is with Ancestry.com. What this will entail or how it will work remains to be seen but since the LDS site is free it could make Legacy software a good choice as the promise to keep the software free to existing users鈥hat could mean paid subscribers only鈥gain not sure of the specifics, however, the upgrade is about $35.00 to $39.00 depending on the options you choose. PAF will not be upgraded but there is no talk of it being discontinued either.

If you need a physical gift for under the tree and can get to a Sam鈥檚 Club, they usually have a Family Tree Maker [latest version 2010] with some Ancestry.com free time鈥epending on the version and price[discounted] it varies from 60 days to one year. Some people love Ancestry.com and others, not so much. It really depends on experience, sometimes when people figure out that they have been researching the wrong ancestor because of non-sourced records they get frustrated and give up.

Says Roots Magic 3 ($30) and Legacy 7 ($35) are tied for first, unless she is a professional or has a Mac. She can get PAF for free from the Mormons. You can get Family Tree Maker plus a year's subscription to Ancestry.com in one bundle, I believe, but can't find the offer.

I have used Roots Magic and its predecessor, FOW, for 10 years. I once had it, FTM and PAF all at once. I liked RM the best. I have never tried Legacy.

You didn't say how much you wanted to spend. For $169 or so you could buy her a year's subscription to Ancestry.com. If she was serious and most of her lines were in the USA after 1850, she'd love it. If it is just a whim, then it would be like buying a boxed set of all the Oscar winning movies on DVD for someone who didn't like movies.

On a side note, both FTM and RM come on a CD if you want, but most people pay via credit card and download. I don't think PAF comes on a CD; downloading is the only option I have ever heard of. This is one of the most frequently asked questions. But not to worry - you'll be able to do this in short order. First, copy your iTunes library from your old computer to a flash drive, external hard drive, or burn it to a disk. You can find your library in My Documents-%26gt;My Music; copy the entire iTunes folder located there. Next, on your new computer, download and install iTunes if you haven't already - the download can be prominently found at www.apple.com/itunes/. I would avoid the PAF file unless you belong to the LDS Church or intend on becoming a member. There is a lot of things on it that are specific to the Church and have nothing to do with non-LDS genealogical research.
You can purchase Family Tree Maker (FTM), Legacy or Roots Magic, which seem to be the current popular ones for less than $40. FMT is affiliated with Ancestry, however, I have found that most serious or professional Genealogists seem to be using Legacy or Roots Magic. Either program cost about the same. I purchased both programs at a Genealogical convention for $10.00 a piece, but I think they are about $30 on line. All three provide about the same charts and are pretty straight forward and easy to learn. The printed charts may vary a little, but they have pedigree and Family Group Sheets as well as the ability to record document information and cite sources. Pictures and copies of documents can be up loaded as well. The primary difference is that Roots Magic is a Beta product so you can provide feedback and assist in the development of the program, while legacy is not a Beta program.
You can download either or both and try them out. When you decide on which you want you can then purchase online, and when the program down loads your files will copy to the purchased program.

Rootsmagic Essentials is a relatively new offering in the “free” software category. This one I tried and it will not allow you to print any reports after you input your data until you purchase the “full-version” of the software, you can just view reports on you monitor, unless they have changed something that I am unaware of. The full version of RootsMagic is $29.95.

All of these free downloads will have less features than the deluxe software but I still think it is a good idea to download them and get a feel for their general appearance and function before making a decision…I always recommend the “try before you buy” policy whenever possible.

Also, the genealogy programs suggested here have message boards on Rootsweb where a user could search the archives to find an answer to most questions or post a new query and receive an answer within a day of asking. Also, I think it is always better to have your data on your own computer rather than on a website because this way you have complete control of you information and never have to be concerned about what someone else might do with your data. I personally, never upload anything to Ancestry.com or any other website because the material becomes their property once you do that [read the terms and conditions, carefully].
