My elderly Mother lives 2000 kilometres away from me, and I spend a lot of time doing remote assistance with her through MSN Messenger. But Messenger is hit and miss, only works when it wants to. You may need to be setup as a user on the remote desktop or you can log in as her. I believe that her PC will have to have certain services running for remote desktop and her firewall would have to allow it as well. It's like you're sitting at her PC when you log in.



It's free software from Microsoft so I think it's worth looking into. I know I connect over a VPN to the office and then startup the remote desktop to connect to my PC there.
