What are major differences between software engineering and computer science research?

I know research can be done in many fields, but I assume there has to be day-to-day activities that are the same. What is a more competitive field? Are software engineers limited to working in a business environment? What are pay differences? What are major differences between software engineering and computer science research?A software engineer focus his work on the elegance of his code, the code should work and be the best like a typical programmer. While he wont discover new techniques or paradigms. Those guys can get payed in higher rates or lower as it depends on the facility he work at. The software engineer usually make money in his entire life no more no less. unless he work at a big company which will make his name. The computer science researcher don't pay much attention on the elegance of his code, the main purpose for his programming is to prove an idea or a theory in a computer science field such as Artificial Intelligence so the code is not meant to be perfect. A CS researcher can and always try to discover new things and prove it on his way. They get payed as high as any modern university or research facility could offer, and they have a bright future by means of discoveries, reputation, and fortune.
