How good of a laptop is needed for Software Engineering Course?

I'm going to be enrolling in college this fall and therefore back to school shopping. My declared major is Software Engineering at the moment, but the university offers a dual degree Hardware and Software Engineering so that is also an option I'm considering to take. How good of a laptop do I need?



Currently I'm considering a quad core i7 because of it's power and desktop replacement capabilities. However, it is quite heavy and expensive. Is this over kill? What would you recommend?

Most of your work will be done in Word, Violet (SE Modeling tool), Netbeans/Eclipse/Visual Studio (Whatever IDE your school embraces), and a Shell client for working on a student machine with emacs/vi.
